NMB Bank PLC is one of the largest commercial banks in Tanzania and provides banking services for loans in individuals, small and medium-sized businesses, state services, large corporations and agriculture. NMB Bank was established in 1997 as part of the National Microfinance Bank Limited Corporation Act after the National National Bank was arising from the Parliamentary Act. At this point, three new companies were established. That is, (a) NBC Holdings Limited (b) National Bank of Commerce (1997) Limited and (c) National Microfinance Bank Limited.
The bank has 226 branches, over 9,000 agents (Wakara), and over 700 ATMs nationwide, representing all districts of Tanzania. NMB has over 4 million customers and employs over 3,400 customers. It is listed on Dar Es Salaam Exchange, and its largest shareholder is a strategic partner that the Tanzanian government met with 34.9% participation, meeting B.V. with 31.8% participation. Euromoney Awards for Excellence selected NMB for eight years as the best bank in Tanzania from 2013 to 2020. The bank was appointed Tanzania's safest bank in 2020 by Global Finance Magazine.
